| The Maryland Rock Raiders 4x4 Club We are people living but not limited to the State of Maryland, we have recruited members outside the State while traveling to Pennsylvania where we visit frequently for our off road driving enjoyment. During these travels it has given us a great insight to the prospective member’s attitude and willingness to help others in time of need, a trait of our club. As a Maryland resident I was disappointed in the response I received from several small clubs when I was looking to join one, in most cases I didn’t even get acknowledged (replied to by e-mail). I did join a club in PA but at the time they only wheeled on Saturdays and that was a work day for me plus their required meetings where to far for me to participate. Frustrated by the lack of replies by other clubs, the attitudes of others and the requirements where a little ridicules and unreasonable .As a result a few friends and I did go wheeling ourselves and with time I noticed that we had something going on, something that could become the nucleus of a club. Allow me to qualify that statement; When we got together we would select an area, investigate the validity of using it, at times and when possible we recruited the knowledge of local area residents or off roaders, once we felt assured it was ok took the challenge to drive through it. Many times we would find ourselves knee deep in mud or had issues that required winching or technical help. We became very resolve and developed great skills in the process. At times we couldn’t get enough action, I mean we where addicted to the trails day or night it made no difference to us, we had the fever bad! When one of us got stuck we would call one of the others guys and as a result we promised to help each other on the trails regardless of the situation, When we needed a winch we would call one of the other guys that had one. But like everything else, it became abusive and unreasonable to receive calls at 1 or 2 AM so we set some rules and guidelines, mostly common sense types, like if you’re drinking and out on the trails, then you get stuck you don’t call, the lesson here was no drinking and driving, much less waste our time or personal resources due to personal stupidity and selfishness. We don’t condone any illegal trail driving or abusive off road conduct. As situations occurred we would find an appropriate resolution we would then incorporate that into our guidelines as well as make it part of our resources. We promote common sense off road driving because that is what it takes, if its not safe don’t do it, if you’re not properly equipped then don’t commit to it, never, never, never ride alone. As people got to meet us, they found our attitude, friendliness and genuine passion for this sport something they liked, thus the beginning of the Maryland Rock Raiders experience and an inside look to our off road brotherhood. Traveling to the off road parks we would meet people that didn't have enough riders or were not part of any club, once we wheeled with them or them with us they would almost always request to join our club. We would be beating up the trails almost every weekend during the first years or so, man did we learn a lot and broke a lot of stuff too. Now we wheel at least one weekend per month, but you can almost count on some of us still wheel every other weekend too! Each time we got out we got better. When we ran into other clubs we would pick their brains for information that helped us get better. All this exposure began to get us noticed and soon thereafter you began to see Maryland Rock Raiders stickers’ areas of the state as well as in PA, NY and VA. With my involvement in car sales and specializing in Jeeps I decided the club should be 90% Jeeps, thus sharing the tools and technical knowledge when off roading. Since those days, we have expanded our membership to other SUV vehicles similar in size or capabilities. Our club logo design has received a lot of compliments from other off road enthusiasts, many times we’ve been told it’s one of the best looking, and we are very proud of it. The administration of this club is managed by one person the founder and that’s me, along with several hand chosen friends that have proven to be knowledgeable and have demonstrated a truly brotherhood like spirit. It is this attitude that contributes to our acclaimed status known as “the brotherhood of off road enthusiasts” fostered and shared among our membership. We share trail events with and support clubs like; the PA Jeep organization, Keystone Krawlers and Blue Ridge Mountain Jeep club to name a few. We have held membership with the United Four Wheel Drive and the Mid-Atlantic Four Wheel Drive Associations that serves our local area. Together these associations look after our interests and use off public lands and fight for every inch we are able to hold to. It is an ongoing struggle monitor the political arena and those oppose to our use of public lands, with environmentalist fighting in every angle possible we continue to loose valuable space where to ride and enjoy our rights to drive as those who gain the privilege to hike the same lands. You can be part of this fight, if you want to continue to enjoy ridding trails, and then learn how to take care of the land and preserve the little we have left to ride in. Joins our cause and join a club to learn more about what you can do for this sport. Watch out for individuals that destroy, trash and violate property while driving off road and report them to the proper authorities, if you don’t then the only place you will ride in on the pavement. Be vigilant and take action when appropriate. Who are we; just a group of people that have come together in a common interest for some collective and positive family off road experiences at paid off road parks or National parks. We have very experienced trail guides that have also been guides for Camp Jeep Annual events. If you feel this is what you are looking to be part of and you have something to offer our club like; technical or mechanical knowledge, trails guiding knowledge, safety experience, land use management or you just want to learn how to have fun with your SUV, then join us. Complete a members application and waiver form, mail it to the address indicated on the form and remember to include your membership dues, you will receive notice of any up coming event and a welcome package to the club. If you haven't joined our MeetUp group please do so, look up Jeep-Maryland Rock Raiders Off road group. Let me be among the first to welcome you to the Maryland Rock Raiders soon.
